Static vs dynamic QR codes, explained simply

The choice comes down to one thing: is the data locked inside the code, or does the code point to something you can change? Here's how they differ and when each one wins.

  • No jargon
  • Honest trade-offs
  • Dynamic plan limits apply.

The short version

Two ways a QR code can work

Static — data baked in

The information (a link, text, Wi-Fi login, contact) is encoded directly in the black-and-white pattern. It's free and permanent, but it can never be changed and can't be tracked.

Dynamic — a link you control

The code holds a short redirect that points to your content. You can change the destination after printing, wrap it in a branded page, and review aggregate scan activity.

When to use which

Pick the right one for the job

Guest Wi-Fi

The password rarely changes and needs to work offline — static is perfect.

  • Static

Serial numbers & labels

Fixed data that must resolve without internet. Go static.

  • Static

Print campaigns

You'll want to change the offer and measure results — dynamic.

  • Dynamic

Restaurant menus

Prices and dishes change often, so editing beats reprinting — dynamic.

  • Dynamic

Business cards

A dynamic vCard stays current as roles and numbers change.

  • Dynamic

Product packaging

Point buyers to guides today and support later without new print runs — dynamic.

Static vs dynamic FAQ

Can I turn a static QR code into a dynamic one?

Not the printed one — a static code's data is fixed. But you can create a new dynamic code and reprint. That's why we suggest going dynamic upfront if there's any chance your content will change.

Do dynamic QR codes cost more?

Dynamic codes need a hosted redirect, so they usually sit behind a plan. Dynamic availability and limits depend on the workspace entitlement. Static QR records are not subject to a numeric entitlement cap.

Are static QR codes less secure?

Neither is inherently unsafe. Dynamic codes actually add options like passwords and expiry, and let you fix a bad link — a static code can't be corrected once printed.

Which one is better for tracking?

Only dynamic codes can be tracked. If you need scan counts, locations or campaign data, you need a dynamic code.

Will a dynamic code stop working if I cancel?

We don't silently pause your codes — check the pricing page for exactly what happens on each plan and at cancellation.

Questions before approval

  • Who owns the destination after the print job ends?
  • How likely is the link, file, price, person or schedule to change?
  • Does the team need country/device/time reporting?
  • Will separate placements need separate measurements?
  • What happens when the workspace reaches a limit or changes plan?
